Movie Polt: Diane Sherman (Sarah Paulson) gives birth prematurely to her newborn child, who receives emergency treatment.

Seventeen years later, Diane homeschools and serves as sole caretaker for her wheelchair-using daughter Chloe (Kiera Allen), who is chronically ill with arrhythmia, hemochromatosis, diabetes and paralysis. Chloe, skilled in technology and engineering, awaits an acceptance letter from the University of Washington. Diane insists she does not mind Chloe leaving home to begin college life, yet repeatedly stops Chloe from seeing the mail before her.

One day, Chloe discovers unfamiliar green pills, apparently prescribed to her mother. Diane insists this new pill, Trigoxin, has been prescribed to Chloe, and it appears in her array of daily medications. Chloe's efforts to research Trigoxin are thwarted by an outage of the home internet connection and she resorts to calling a stranger to ask him to search for the drug's identity and purpose. Chloe learns that Trigoxin treats heart conditions, but is universally a red pill.

Now completely suspicious, Chloe uses the pretext of seeing a movie with her mother to sneak across the street to the prescribing pharmacy and identify the green pill. Chloe learns it is a muscle relaxant for dogs, which could cause leg paralysis if ingested by humans. Diane chases down Chloe as she begins to have an asthma attack, injecting her with a sedative before she can communicate with anyone else.

Chloe wakes to find that her mother is not home and she is locked in her bedroom. Obvious means of leaving or contacting the outside world have been sabotaged, but Chloe manages to escape the house with difficulty and flags down a mailman. Before he can take Chloe to the police, Diane returns home and attacks them both in the driveway, killing the mailman.

Chloe again awakes imprisoned, now in the basement with her wheelchair chained where she discovers the acceptance letter in the trash and a box of photos and documents, showing that Diane's real daughter died two hours after birth. The box's contents further reveal that Diane stole Chloe from a hospital as a baby, and that Chloe could walk as a child.

Diane enters the basement where Chloe confronts her with what she has found. Without naming it, Chloe accuses Diane of inflicting factitious disorder imposed on another on her through her childhood, and wonders if she was ever genuinely sick. Diane denies Chloe's accusation and minimizes her kidnapping, then insists she has only acted to help Chloe. Diane produces medical equipment and fills a syringe with a neurotoxin, intent on maintaining her role as Chloe's medical caregiver. Chloe escapes and quickly drinks a household poison, forcing Diane to hospitalize her.

Chloe is stabilized, but cannot communicate to anyone while intubated and still weak in a hospital bed. Diane, armed with a gun, kidnaps Chloe before she can be questioned about her "suicide attempt". When Chloe realizes she is on the University of Washington’s medical campus, she resolves that she will not be controlled, and manages to use her feet to engage her wheelchair's footbrake, stopping Diane from pushing her wheelchair and giving security time to reach them. Diane is incapacitated by security, falling down a flight of stairs in the process.

Seven years later, Chloe has gained partial use of her legs again and regularly visits Diane, who is bedridden in prison, still calling her "Mom". Chloe updates Diane about her life; she is married with a child and developing prosthetics for children. Chloe then reveals dog medication she has smuggled into the prison and forces it on Diane, intending for her to suffer like she did.
