Elements of the film allude to Robert Bresson's Diary of a Country Priest (1951), Ingmar Bergman's Winter Light (1963), and the work of Carl Dreyer,[4] as well as Schrader's own script for Taxi Driver (1976).

Forty-six year old Reverend Ernst Toller is that the pastor at the historic First Reformed Church in upstate ny . it’s seen because the “tourist” church or the “souvenir shop” (its historical significance partly it being a stop on the Underground Railroad before the slaves crossed into Canada) by Abundant Life, which owns the church and which operates a contemporary self-named five thousand seat church overseen by Reverend Joel Jeffers. If you wish the good filmmakers of the black and white era like Bresson and Bergman you’ll enjoy ‘First Reformed’ as you’ll see direct influences from Diary of a rustic Priest and Winter Light here.

Made for the 2018 audience, it is a dark character study almost like what Schrader’s wiped out Taxi Driver before. I enjoyed it for what it’s and therefore the overall slow-burning narrative.
